Shopping

In the city of fashion, some people follow it, others don’t do it, and then there are those who simply create their own. Then come the trendhunters of  big brands that are dedicated to wander through the different neighborhoods of the city taking notes of what they see, copying it to incorporate into their production and turn it into “official” fashion.

At your risk

At your risk

It was a market day and the street was full of stalls, and this one stood out from the others. I think he got what he wanted, not worried about certain risks, as someone  will buy one placed  in the middle, for example.

I took this picture  to show one more sign of attitude, and a metaphor for this city, showing how disproportionate it can be at times.

Store clerk

Store clerk

I wanted to take a portrait of this boy with sunglasses, a clerk of the store behind him. Already I had an idea about how it would be, but he had, better than me, a clear idea how it will be. He said yes, you can, wait a moment … and he return with two girls from passersby!

Providence again was on my side and suddenly everything made sense. Four persons, yes four, gathered spontaneously, randomly, showing how the colors of the city are mixed in harmony

They don’t know each other.

Jacobo

Jacobo

Young and efficient. He is a spanish working as an assistant to a senior executive in a financial company in the city. Enjoys his work and is fully integrated into New York life and participate in city events, such as running the marathon.

I met him through craiglist when I was looking for an apartment. We reached an agreement and I rented one of the rooms. The apartment was located in the financial heart of Manhattan a few blocks from Central Park and a few avenues of Hell’s Kitchen.

During the time I was in his apartment, and the conversations we had, I learned many things about the functioning of the city, work, housing, etc., very different from how it works in Europe, how complicated it’s for a foreigner legalize their work situation and housing, what it means not to have an economic history to rent an apartment, and so many more things that didn’t stop surprising me.

In one of those conversations I mentioned my intention to portray him, to which he agreed tasteful, so settled for a particular day. Just the night before that day, He suffered the loss of his grandfather. He didn’t sleep all night and was very affected. Despite that, He didn’t want to change the day, although it was not happy with his appearance.

If by any chance you see this picture, Jacobo, I send to you a greeting and I would like to tell you that for me were unforgettable days. Thank you for your friendly hosting. I hope everything goes well for you!

Homeless

This is another face of this city, as anywhere else, unfortunately. I thought about taking a picture as respectful, dignified and objective as possible.

I took the picture because his/her identity was preserved, and reminds me that were there are rich men, are poor men.

Somewhere in The Bronx

Somewhere in The Bronx

Perhaps the bad reputation of this neighborhood of New York has influenced me, perhaps my imagination has played a trick on me and has made me see a distorted reality …

I don’t know what’s inside those bags. They may be new items,  it’s a removal, or simply, someone has thoroughly cleaned

Anyway, I see quite order and no one seems to notice as well, even though it could be a bit embarrassing trying to enter the car…

They were talking on the sidewalk, left side of picture, and let me take a portrait, but before that, one of them placed  in the middle of their motorcycles as pic shows.

The way he acted, made me think, in that moment, he seemed proud, not of his job but of his Harley Davidson.

Anyway, he doesn’t seem worried about his appearance, showing donut eaters stereotype about US Police Department.

Balance

Balance

The operator doesn’t seem worried about his precarious  balance at the top of the ladder, as this must be the way people  achieve their goals in this city, looking for the fastest and shortest way even more risky.

The staircase as a metaphor for the city of opportunities. Perhaps it is not difficult to get high, but stay, and higher you climb, the harder it may be the fall.

Anyway, maybe,  simply by order of their boss, this man is above because he drew the short straw.

Maybe the boss is the one looking, thinking if  health insurance is up to date, and it is next, saying I do not want to look …

This man sells hot dogs in the heart of the financial district were people don’t spend time to have lunch and fast food is successful.

His working day exceeds eight hours.

At the dealer

I was surprised when I saw  them so excited taking a look  to the storefront,  but the most was when they decided to come into the shop. I waited  for about twenty minutes to come out!

Perhaps they were seeking the fastest way to go to heaven (…or hell!).

They knew I was waiting for them and it is curious the way he show me the camera as saying “only taken pictures”, with his nervous? smile, maybe thinking “we have been hunted”.
